This fabric has been hanging around my favorite fabric shop for a while. How I managed to miss it is beyond me. It's such a happy print: Sunny yellow with daisies; joy in textile form. G's been asking for a yellow skirt for some time, so I was happy to oblige.
It's a basic a-line skirt with curved patch pockets that I trimmed in bias tape for contrast. The front waistband is flat and trimmed in bias tape as well. The back waistband is elastic. I think the hardest part was working out the size and proportion of the pockets. I'm still not sure I have it quite right. But kind of cute, no? So, why not make another one in different fabric? I had some striped canvas laying around and made this:
But then, why stop there? In this attempt of the skirt, I decided to add some other design features. Since the fabric is canvas, it reminded me of sails. I can never resist anything sailor-like. So, I embroidered a couple of anchors on the pockets for a nautical touch.
And just for the heck of it, and because I wanted to learn how to work one into a design, a kick-pleat in the back.
I figure that's enough design elements for one skirt. What does the model think?
Pockets? Sweet! Now, if you'll excuse me I have things to do. This basil's not going to water itself, you know.
Can I have one?
